Diethylene glycol is a colourless, odourless, non volatile, hygroscopic liquid. It is characterised by two hydroxyl groups and one ether linkage, which contribute to its high water solubility, hygroscopicity, solvent properties and reactivity with many organic compounds. The major applications for diethylene glycol are in polyester resins and gas treating.
Synonyms for diethylene glycol (DEG) are diglycol, dihydroxydiethyl ether, 2,2' - oxidiethanol, (2-hydroxyethyl) ether and 2,2 - oxybisethanol.
Its Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Number is 111-46-6.
